What are Virtual Office Avatars?
In a traditional office, your presence is physical. In a Virtual HQ, that presence is represented by an Avatar. An avatar is more than just a profile picture; it is a dynamic, visual character that moves, interacts, and signals availability within the 2.5D Isometric World.
Why Avatars Matter for Remote Culture
Transitioning from a grid of video boxes to an avatar-based system solves several "pain points" of remote work:
Identity and Expression: Team members can customize their look, helping them feel more "seen" and represented within the digital workspace.
Reduced Fatigue: Interacting through an avatar reduces the constant pressure of being "on-camera," allowing for more natural, less exhausting daily presence.
Visual Context: An avatar's position tells a story about what a person is doing without a single Slack message being sent. You can see at a glance if someone is sitting at a desk, standing in a "Daily Standup Room," or hanging out in a break area.
Avatar Features in SoWork
SoWork's avatars are designed to be professional yet engaging, providing high-fidelity interaction:
Dynamic States: Avatars automatically reflect Digital Office Presence Signals. If you are in "Focus Mode," your avatar clearly signals to others that you are busy.
Proximity-Based Interaction: When your avatar moves near another, Spatial Meetings are triggered, allowing for spontaneous video or audio conversations just like in a physical office.
Seamless Onboarding: Part of the Team Activation process involves each user creating their avatar, which serves as a fun, low-pressure introduction to the virtual workspace.
